Max is the result of the merger of two video streaming platforms: HBO Max and Discovery+, which arrived in France fairly recently, in 2024. Max is a great platform for watching many films and series from the Warner Bros and HBO universes, and even all the famous Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and other films.
I’m sharing with you a simple VPN-free trick that allows me to pay less for HBO Max, by reducing the price of the Max Premium offer from €4/month.
How can I pay less for HBO Max?
The classic methods mentioned for reducing the cost of an HBO Max subscription often include using a VPN and sharing a subscription.
Using a VPN: not recommended
At first sight, using a VPN to change location and benefit from lower tariffs may seem like a good solution.
The idea is simple: by changing your IP address, you can simulate a connection from a country where the HBO Max rate is cheaper. However, I don’t recommend this solution, which has a number of drawbacks:
- Even if we’re not talking about having good IT skills, it’s still necessary to have a minimum knowledge of how to use a VPN.
- Using a good VPN costs extra on top of the subscription fee
- Simulating your connection in Turkey or India was a good plan, but the platform was no longer offering subscriptions in these countries in 2024. So it’s not always valid or reliable to bet on that.
- There are risks associated with the conditions of use of the Max platform, which could penalise the practice if it detects the use of a VPN to pay less.
