How Midjourney works in brief
Midjourney works like a visual creation assistant. When you submit a prompt, the AI automatically generates several images corresponding to the idea. You can then select the image that inspires you most and request variations or improvements on that version.
The prompt is the order given to Midjourney, a kind of brief to make him understand what is expected of him.
Thanks to its memory, Midjourney retains the history of creations, so you can start from an image that has already been generated and iteratively refine the concept until you get the perfect rendering.
Once Midjourney has given you 4 images, you have a number of options for working with the images, using the U and V buttons (there are in fact many other options, but here are the basic ones):
- U (Upscale) buttons to increase the resolution of U1, U2, U3 and U4 correspond to one of the 4 images generated. By clicking on one of them, you ask the AI to improve the details, resulting in a sharper version ready to be used for your projects.
- V (Variations) buttons to create variations based on the corresponding image V1, V2, V3 or V4. By pressing buttons, Midjourney generates a new batch of images based on the characteristics of the chosen image.
- Re-roll button to ask the AI to generate a new batch of 4 images from the same prompt if none of the images suits you.

Midjourney offers a number of subscription packages with varying levels of performance. Before we look at how to reduce the cost, here are the different Midjourney plans.

The Basic plan is the most affordable in terms of price, but it does not have a relax generation mode, which means that once you have reached your fast generation quota, you are stuck. The other plans are fairly expensive and are suitable for professionals who use Midjourney for their work.

How to test Midjourney for free
Until 2023 Midjourney was offering 25 free generations, which meant you could get to grips with the tool by testing it, but this is no longer possible (perhaps they will reactivate these trials one day?).
